Outside the Telway

Dateline: Madison Heights, Mich. I’ve been seeing this place from the inside of a car ever since I lived a mile or two away starting in 1965, and yet I had never been inside. The fact that I became a White Castle fanatic the second I moved away from White Castle territory made this especially odd. Thus was born the Slider Tour of Metro Detroit.
The Menu at Greene’s Hamburgers

Another typical Detroit-slider-joint menu. Note the breakfast!
Outside Bates Hamburgers

The first stop in my tour of Detroit’s slider joints, in Farmington Hills. I was disappointed to find that this Bates location, unlike the area’s other slider joints, is not a shiny white box.

Big-A** Sandwiches

I tracked down VooDoo Donuts at 3rd Ave near Burnside, but the humongous donuts didn’t seem like quite the right thing to get for lunch. So instead, I got myself an even more humongous big-a** roast-beef sandwich, which came with french fries (in the sandwich bun) and bechemel cheese. I could only eat half of it …

I’m spending the two months of April and May, 2012 in Portland, OR … and I brought my camera(s) with me to record my observations and impressions of the city. I’ve been here on random occasions since the mid-1970s, mostly for short business visits to high-tech computer companies, as well as a couple of recent family visits. But I don’t really know much about the city, other than what I’ve recently read in this Wikipedia article; if you skim through it, you’ll know basically as much as I do about the place.
I’m staying in a condo in the "Pearl District" section of northwest Portland, which seems to have a lot of renovated lofts and warehouses, as well as a bunch of shops and restaurants. It doesn’t seem to be the richest or the poorest part of town, nor is it the center of the most liberal hippies or the most conservative folks. But I’m starting to wander into other parts of the city, and hopefully I’ll gradually accumulate a bunch of different photos of the people, the buildings, the landmarks, and all of the other details that make Portland different than … well, at least different from New York City.
Susie, you promised that you would come pick me up with your truck. You expect me to walk 5 miles to your house with this thing?

This was taken at the Portland Farmer’s Market, on the campus of Portland State University (PSU).
This is one of the four members of the musical group Alma Desnuda, which played some music during the farmer’s market. You can see a 3:57 video of one of their songs on YouTube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YeV0OS2Pw0&feature=youtu.be and you can get more information by visiting their website at www.4nakedsouls.com
