My Cameras

These are the ones I actually shoot with, though some more than others.
Left to right:
Argus A: 35mm, circa 1936. Works great, once you can get used to the complicated controls.
Yashica-A: Medium format. Also complicated, and confusing to look through the top and have everything reversed. Amazing, sharp, rich photos, if you have the patience.
Olympus OM-G: For those times when you need a manual SLR, it’s hard to go wrong with an Olympus. I’ve had five or six various Olympi over the years, from point-and-shoot to full-auto SLR, and I’ve loved all of them.
Yamasheta: little plastic thing I picked up at an estate sale, which took some of my favorite photos I’ve ever shot. R.I.P.
Kodak Retinette IA: 35mm, circa 1960. This one was a gift from an older couple who’d had it since it was new. It’s fun to shoot with, and it’s a beautiful-looking machine, but the photos were honestly nothing to write home about.
Kodak Flashfun: My first medium-format camera. Very, very cool.
Argus C3: Best-selling 35mm camera in history, and with cool angular styling that earned the nickname "the brick." Scored at an estate sale for a few dollars. This one’s got some focus issues (I think it may have had a Coke spilled in its guts at some point), but still fun to shoot with and a great conversation piece.
Brownie Starmite: I’m not sure where this one came from. There’s a roll of film in it that I put in there last October. We need to finish that roll.
Yashica Flash-O-Set: Another estate sale find. A neat-looking 35mm, with VERY solid early-60s Japanese construction. (I.e.: It’s really heavy.) Gets interesting photos too, though I never quite got the hang of it. But that’s all over now anyway, since I just bought my new…
Olympus XA2: After going through all these cameras over the last few years (and another ten or so that aren’t picured), I’d finally nailed down exactly what I did and did not want in a camera. I did a bunch of research, and got this baby on eBay. First roll of film is in it now; watch this space for photos.
(I just realized I forgot to put my awesome half-frame Fed Micron in the photo. Rather than go re-take the photo, I’ll just ask that you click here and take a look at it.)

It’s Wednesday, and you know what that means – in Memphis, it’s Flyer day.
Our venerable local alt-weekly is deposited in wire racks and little green boxes all over the city on Wednesdays, packed with news, music listings and the most incomprehensible astrology readings.
