Dateline: Madison Heights, Mich. I’ve been seeing this place from the inside of a car ever since I lived a mile or two away starting in 1965, and yet I had never been inside. The fact that I became a White Castle fanatic the second I moved away from White Castle territory made this especially odd. Thus was born the Slider Tour of Metro Detroit.

The first stop in my tour of Detroit’s slider joints, in Farmington Hills. I was disappointed to find that this Bates location, unlike the area’s other slider joints, is not a shiny white box.
