Dallas, A Sports Town to Love!
I’m not sure where to begin. I mean, I don’t even know how I missed this. On October 4, 2011 the AOL Sporting News website posted a list of the best sports cities. Who was ranked number one, numero uno in the land? It was none other than our own favorite metroplex, Dallas-Ft. Worth! Of course, I knew that, but I didn’t realize it was such a well known fact.
When discussing Dallas sports, it’s hard not to start with the Dallas Cowboys. After all, who else can claim to be “America’s Team”? The Cowboys share the number two spot with the San Francisco 49ers for Super Bowl wins. The Dallas Cowboys also are tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl appearances (each have 8). The list of Dallas Cowboys legends is far too long for an article of this nature. Tom Landry, Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, Drew Pearson, Michael Irving, Emmitt Smith, Tony Dorsett, Randy White, Daryl Johnston, Bob Lily, and the list goes on and on!
Next up is the defending world champions Dallas Mavericks! For those of us who have grown up as Mavericks fans, the 2011 season was sweet victory. There were so many rights in that championship… watching Jason Kidd get his first and only NBA ring with the team he started with… watching Dirk Nowitzki get his award for a career of hard work. Of course, watching Dallas pick apart the Miami Heat with their dream-team threesome was icing on the cake. I was, am, and will continue to be proud to be a fan!
Did someone say baseball? The Texas Rangers have a loyal, hometown fan base… and it’s well deserved. Like the Mavericks, many of us have watched the Rangers come of age. With back to back appearances in the World Series in 2010 and 2011, they clearly are a force to be reckoned with. A championship is sure to come, hopefully soon! Go Rangers!
Dallas can be one of the hottest cities in the country in the summertime. That’s part of the reason why it’s so amazing that the Dallas Stars won the Stanley Cup in 1999. The funniest thing was hearing radio deejays explaining the rules of hockey to listeners while the Stars were in route to the only Stanley Cup win in franchise history. The city of Dallas got behind the Stars then, and has been on board since!
I’ve only listed the four major men’s sports. I could continue with FC Dallas, the TCU Football team, the SMU football team, and any number of high school football, basketball, and volleyball programs that I am sure helped solidify Dallas’s crown as the number one sports town. I’ll save that for another article. For now, Go Cowboys! Go Mavericks! Go Rangers! Go Stars! And Go Dallas Sports Fans!
