Burlesque - a humorous and provocative stage show featuring slapstick humor,
comic skits, bawdy songs, striptease acts, and a scantily clad female chorus.
Out side of New York City, Las Vegas and LA, there are few cities where an audience can find a burlesque show two to three times a week – every week. Who would have thought Denver Colorado, queen city of the plains, gateway to the Rockies. Well for those in the know, there is frequently a bawdy mix of music mischief and laughter going on at one of the usual haunts. Whether it be Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret in the basement of the historic Daniels and Fischer tower, 3 Kings Tavern where Panties @ the Bar draws sell-out crowds, burlesque has a home in Denver. This is not a new love affair with the fans in Denver. The burlesque scene in Denver blossomed some 6 years ago or so, and has a strong run ever since
Where Burlesque plays in Denver
Denver has two premier burlesque houses. The most well know venue for burlesque is Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret. Lannie’s is owned and run by Lannie Garrett, a well know and long time entertainment staple in Denver. Lannie’s offers several unique qualities including its location. Resident in the basement of the historic D&F tower on the 16th Street Pedestrian Mall. To walk by the tower, that was once the cornerstone of the Daniels and Fischer Mercantile building. From the street the tower doesn’t seem spacious enough to hour small offices let alone a Cabaret. This is truly a place to take in a burlesque show if your in town. The regulars know Lannie’s is the place to go for entertainment and her burlesque fair never disappoints
Equally well known in the Denver entertainment scene is 3 Kings Tavern. While 3 Kings is known for a variety of genres, their burlesque, Panties @ the Bar, is a staple. Denver based burlesque troop started in 2001 by Michelle and Kitty. The two met in Denver and took a trip to Tease-O-Rama in New Orleans where they decided to form Ooh La La Presents… so they could showcase all types of performances, rather than limit themselves to one style. Since then they have been unstoppable, performing a large production nearly every month. These performances are always unique with a surprise in every show. One never knows what to expect.
There are several other venues that periodically have burlesque as part of their entertainment fare. So if burlesque is in your blood or your just looking for a roaring good time, you couldn’t be in a better place than Denver, that is if you’re not in New York city Or LA.
